SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Families - The Cheney-Sanders History in Fort Worth
DESCRIPTION:Come with us on a journey into the Garden of Eden neighborhood of Fort Worth.  In commemoration of African American History Month\, author Drew Sanders will share the engaging story of his Cheney and Sanders ancestors’ path to Texas and the freedman’s community they established from his new book\, The Garden of Eden.  Drawing from personal interviews and exhaustive research\, Sanders will recall the joys and sorrows of life in the Garden from its early days as a flourishing farm to its 21st century role as the city’s first African American historic and cultural landmark district.  A book signing will follow  his presentation. \nDrew Sanders is a graduate of Eastern New Mexico University and retired after a thirty-eight year career with Texas Industries.  The Garden of Eden: The Story of a Freedman’s Community in Tarrant County\, Texas\, is the culmination of a lifelong interest in family and local history. \nAdmission is free.

DESCRIPTION:TCU’s Mary Couts Burnett Library had a makeover inside and out in 2015!  Library Dean June Koelker will introduce you to the new facilities and discuss library services available to the entire community.  She will highlight the library’s growing special collections department and how its materials can assist in your research. \nDr. Koelker began her career at TCU in 1988 and was appointed Dean of the Mary Couts Burnett Library in 2006.  She holds degrees from the University of North Texas and the University of Arizona.  In addition to her involvement in the local community\, she is very active in professional organizations having served as chair of the Texas Council of Academic Libraries and treasurer of the Texas Library Association. \nAdmission is free.

DESCRIPTION:Whether you are trying solve a crime or a historic mystery\, evidence is key.  Find out from investigator Max Courtney what role forensic science has played in crime scene interpretation and courtroom drama in the Fort Worth area.  After a brief history of the development of forensic science from fingerprints to DNA\, he will examine several case histories to illustrate how these forensic techniques have been applied to local crimes you are sure to recall.  Don’t miss this chance to go behind the scenes in Fort Worth’s own version of “CSI.” \nA chemist by training\, Max Courtney has worked in forensic science labs for forty-five years and has participated in a number of high-profile cases.  He also has taught at Tarrant County College\, University of Texas at Arlington\, and Baylor University and is an avid amateur historian. \n

SUMMARY:Texas Film Round-Up:  Preserve Your Personal Film History
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar for October 3 at 10:30am for a special presentation on film preservation from Madeline Moya\, Managing Director at TAMI in Austin. She oversees collections development\, the agency’s film catalog\, and website administration. Madeline holds a master’s degree in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin\, with a focus in archives and preservation of audiovisual media. Prior to her work at TAMI\, she worked in records management for Travis County\, in the film department of the Harry Ransom Center\, and spent a decade as a record store clerk. She loves home movies and regional films\, classic cinema\, and all things Texana. \nMs. Moya and her fellow TAMI staff members will be on-hand after the program to talk with potential donors and screen additional historic film.  Now is the time to pull those film canisters out of the closet.  Here are the guidelines: \n\nFilms or videos must be Texas-related (i.e. shot in Texas\, shot by a Texan\, or be about Texas)\nThe owner must be willing and able to contribute a digital copy of the materials to the archive ( i.e. you are or you represent the copyright holder)\nNo more than 50 films and videos may be contributed per household\, only 10 of which may be videotape.
